World exclusivity : the Négrette grape variety
Found no where else in the world, this variety has to account
for 50-70 % of the appellation’s plantation.
A UNIQUE AND CAPRICIOUS VARIETY
Brought back from Cyprus, this unique variety first appeared
during the 12th century under the name of Mavro (black in
Greek). This temperamental, early ripening variety, has
remarkably well acclimated to the one and only terroir of
Fronton.
It is a refined and delicate grape variety which doesn’t like
humidity. In addtition, it is perfectly adapted to the wind of
Autan.
AMPELOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS
Négrette has often been confounded with another varieties,
but in reality it belongs to the Cot family :
 Relatively vigorous strain ;
 Fairly large, white and cottony bud ;
 Dark green, medium sized velvety leaves, covered
with fine bubbles ;
 Small and compact bunches ;
 Small black elliptic shaped grapes.
TASTING
This is one of rare varieties, which once vinified,
expresses in addition to discreet violet, red berry,
liquorice and pepper aromas – notes identical to those
that come to the fore when biting into the fresh berry.
Intense aromatic complexity is therefore ensured,
producing the structure, elegance, charm and
personality of the wines from Fronton.
